Analyzing multisatellite (INTERBALL-1, MAGION-4, WIND) measurement data, two examples of high-latitude magnetopause motion are considered; an estimate of motion amplitude is derived, and a correlation of measurement data and model calculations is made; possible origins of observed fast oscillations of the magnetosphere boundary are discussed. Among these are short-term variations of solar wind pressure and magnetosheath plasma, which cause a local boundary shift in correspondence with magnetopause models; an instability of the Kelvin-Helmholtz type, which gives rise to a wave propagation along the boundary; and reconnection, which results in production of high-velocity plasma flows. While studying multiple crossings, it is shown that short-time magnetopause oscillations are explained by variations in the magnetosheath plasma pressure capable of providing the observed magnetopause variation amplitude, rather than variations in solar wind parameters. Sometimes it is possible that the excitation of Kelvin-Helmholtz instability leads to additional magnetopause variations.
