We argue that the free string spectrum in 4 spacetime dimensions is qualitatively different from the interacting spectrum, since most free states would apparently be hidden by event horizons on introducing even weak coupling. However, we argue that heterotic superstrings evade horizon formation by forming thin shells held aloft by thermal instanton effects.
