On the basis of a forward extrapolation of secular variations in the geomagnetic field, in particular a rapid decrease in the dipole moment, wandering of the dipole axis direction and westward drifts of the nondipole components, the change in the location and form of the auroral zone for the next 1000 years is estimated. The auroral zone will tend to expand to lower latitudes because of a decrease in the dipole moment, rotate westward and become considerably deformed. In 1000 years it will no longer be a circular zone in each high latitude. A large part of Europe may be within the auroral zone in 500 years from now, and the United States and even Japan may also be in the auroral zone in 1000 years.
