Observations of moving solar system objects in POS mode with the FGSs have the potential of improving the angular accuracy of such measurements by an order of magnitude over ground-based measurements. Such measurements would provide the most accurate plate scale determination for HST, as well as improve the determination of the motions of such objects for both orbital and solar system gravity field determinations. The first attempt at the Plate Scale measurement failed to acquire fine lock on the minor planet and reference stars because of a shortening of the Course Track walkdown to the point where the Interferometer transfer function of the FGS was missed entirely. This observation is designed to demonstrate the ability of the FGS to lock onto an asteroid with Fine Lock, and track it, using only two orbits of GTO time allocated by the AST for Minor Planet work already. Further minor planet observations with the FGSs is contingent on the outcome of this test.
