The primary purpose of this proposal is to study the jet in Cen A / NGC 5128. The jet has been studied in x-rays with Einstein and ROSAT, and has been shown to have sub-arcsecond structure in the radio. Ground- based optical observations of the inner jet region have been inconclusive. We propose to observe the inner jet in the UV using the FOC. We will also use the WFC with its polarizers to observe the same region, to determine intrinsic polarization and to help study those structures which lie behind the dust lane. We will measure the spectrum of the jet and its sub-structure as a function of position, from radio through optical and UV to the x-ray, determine the existence of any spectral break, and, in general, check the correctness of the synchrotron hypothesis. We may also be able to determine the location of electron acceleration regions. If 0.1 arcsec optical structure exists, we will also establish the basis for proper motion and synchrotron decay lifetime studies. We will also use the FOC to study a bright knot of x-ray emission seen in a ridge parallel to but outside the dust lane, pursuing the hypothesis that emission is coming from massive binaries in a region of star formation. During the primary observations, we propose parallel observations in the halo, to help interpret the diffuse x-ray emission, identify sources observed with ROSAT, and extend the mapping of globular clusters in NGC 5128.
