We propose to extend a study begun during Cycle 1 of chemical and physical processes in translucent clouds, which represent the transition between diffuse and dark clouds, in which the chemistry changes as carbon goes from being largely atomic (ionized) to being contained primarily in the form of CO, and atomic abundances are altered as depletions increase. Our preliminary Cycle 1 results show that we have detected several molecular species, which will help refine our chemical models, and that we will be able to determine accurate depletions. Using information gained from rotational excitation of molecules, as well as fine-structure excitation of atomic species, we will gain new insights into the physical conditions as well. For our Cycle 3 proposal we have selected one star representing a contrast with our initial target, in that the star has a greater cloud density, as indicated by ground-based C2 and CO measurements. Experience with our Cycle 1 data has refined our choice of wavelength settings and S/N characteristics of the instrument so that in less than twice the time devoted to our first target we expect to gain nearly as much detailed information on each of our four new targets.
