The plasma resonance phenomena observed at several frequencies by the GEOS-1 S-301 relaxation sounder are identified through a pattern recognition software process implemented in a minicomputer which receives on-line the compressed data. The present paper deals with new philosophy of relaxation sounding. The design of this fully automated closed-loop system is described. Some results of instantaneous measurements of magnetospheric electron density and field strength are examined, along with results obtained from the tracking of resonance phenomena; the existence of very small-scale fluctuations of electron density is pointed out, and the directivity features of electrostatic waves are noted.
