Spacecraft/plasma interaction produces many complex spectral and angular features in the measurement of the particle distribution function by the S-302 low-energy particle experiment. In the present paper, selected data are used to illustrate the wide variety of conditions that have been encountered. The real-time control, made possible by a powerful ground-base computer, has proven to be extremely helpful in differentiating between vehicle-induced effects and direct measurements of the ambient plasma. The present capability to trace the variation of the cold plasma throughout most of the orbit is demonstrated. The typical plasma density of one particle per cubic centimeter in the plasma trough is found to vary by up to an order of magnitude from one orbit to the next, while the temperature is more consistently around 1 eV. The data presented will be extremely useful in the analysis of wave particle interactions known to occur throughout the region traversed by the GEOS satellite.
