Measurements of plasma lines in the auroral E layer in January 1976 were obtained by use of the Chatanika incoherent scatter radar and are described. Plasma lines, found between 98 and 134 km, were observed in the interval between 3.8 and 6.0 MHz, and the variation of the derived plasma wave intensities is reported. The weakest waves were at the lowest altitudes, while the strongest were just below the maximum altitudes. While no frequency dependence was apparent at the lowest altitudes, lower-frequency plasma waves were stronger at the highest altitudes. It is suggested that the described variations are related to the altitude variations of both the suprathermal electron spectrum and the electron temperature.
