The role of low temperature detectors (LTDs) for astrophysical applications is discussed. LTDs can provide a break-through in the spectroscopic sensitivity for the next generation of large X-ray missions by combining the required energy resolution with high efficiency and imaging capabilities. In the UV/VIS range the spectroscopic capabilities are limited, but the combination with high time resolution provides for niche applications. The current status and prospects of various types of LTDs in these fields are summarized.
