There is good evidence that the major changes of sea level over the past 500 m.y. have been caused by changes in the volume of the oceanic ridge system. Increases in ridge volume result from both increases in the length of the ridge system and increases in spreading rates. Using the thermal boundary layer theory for the thermal structure and subsidence of oceanic ridges, the ridge volume is related to the ridge heat flow. In this paper, the observations on paleo-sea level are used to infer variations in the ridge heat flow over the last 500 m.y. The ridge contribution to the total surface heat flow has varied between about 25% and 50% or more of the total. Since periods of rapid plate accretion must correspond to periods of rapid plate consumption, and orogenic phenomena are mainly associated with plate consumption, it is likely that high sea levels will prove to be the best indicators of the episodicity of orogeny.
