With a central density of 3ṡ 105 M&sun; pc-3 and estimated total mass of 104 M&sun;, the Arches cluster is one of the most massive and compact young clusters in the Milky Way, and one of the rare nearby starburst clusters. Located at a projected distance of only 25 pc from the Galactic Center at a heliocentric distance of 8 kpc, the Arches cluster serves as a template for massive star cluster formation in the nuclei of distant galaxies. Resolving the stellar population in the cluster core given the extreme density and the distance of the cluster is challenging even for current AO systems.
