Space Missions: Mars
Scientific paper
Outlines a general strategy for the exploration of Mars. The strategy is conceptual only, and was developed by the International Mars Exploration Working Group (IMEWG), which has representatives from nine national space agencies and the European Space Agency. The IMEWG was conceived at a meeting of the Inter Agency Consultative Group (IACG) at Wiesbaden, Germany, May 1993, and held its first meeting at Graz, Austria, in October 1993. The charter of the IMEWG is as follows: (1) Produce an international stragegy for the exploration of Mars beyond the current approved missions. (2) Provide a forum for the coordination of future Mars exploration missions. (3) Examine the possibilities for an international Mars Network Mission as the next step beyond the 1996 opportunity. At the Graz meeting two working groups were established to implement items 1 and 3 of the charter. A strategy working group examined the scientific goals of Mars exploration. A network working group was to look into ways of implementing a network mission, but expanded its goal to formulate an international Mars exploration plan for the next decade.
