A highlight problem now in solar physics is: what are the most important accelerated species in solar flares, electrons or protons? It has been believed for a long time that the electrons dominate particle acceleration in solar flares. But recent γ-ray observations show that quite amount of energy resides in acceleration protons in powering solar flares. This paper summarizes different views on the topic, and discusses the possible conclusions in the near future.
