A method of processing radio occultation data on planetary atmospheres is developed which takes into account horizontal gradients of the refractive index and the shape of the planet. The method involves the integration of the differential equations describing the radio beam trajectory in a three-dimensional inhomogeneous medium, and the subsequent solution of a system of nonlinear equations. The method is shown to be particularly applicable to the radio occultation of the atmospheres of Jupiter and Saturn.
