The ablation of large spherical bodies entering the earth's atmosphere at meteoric velocities is calculated for a range of initial diameters, velocities, and reentry angles. An expression for the total mass loss is derived which includes the effects of thermal radiation, convective, heat transfer, and the mass blowing effect on the boundary layer. The solution is coupled with the trajectory to account for changes in ballistic coefficient during ablation. Plots of the radiative heat transfer rate are also presented.
