The signatures of energetic particle flux profiles (electrons Ee greater than 10 keV, protons Ep greater than 150 keV, alpha particles, and the CNO group of nuclei with E = 1.1-3.5 MeV/nucl) measured on the low-altitude polar orbiting satellite Intercosmos-17 are examined for a geomagnetically disturbed period on February 15, 1978. The projection of the dayside cusp onto low altitudes, as well as of both the high- and low-latitude boundaries of the plasma sheet and the polar cap boundaries are determined from particle data, including magnetospheric particles and solar cosmic rays. Changes of the positions of these boundaries connected with solar-wind parameters during geomagnetic disturbances are analyzed and discussed in terms of a plasmoidlike model of magnetospheric substorms.
