Existing calculations of the heat balance of the mesopause are contradictory, particularly, with respect to the predominance of radiative heating or radiative cooling of the mesosphere and to the seasonal temperature variations in the upper mesosphere. None of the mechanisms (mesoscale waves; chemical heat sources; and heat transfer by vertical motions) that have been proposed to explain the anomalous thermal conditions in the upper mesosphere are capable of explaining the basic characteristics of the mesospheric temperature profile and its latitudinal and seasonal variations. Study of the part played by various sources in the thermal regime of the upper atmosphere is hampered by insufficient knowledge of the structure of the upper atmosphere, in particular, on the latitudinal, and seasonal variations of the minor constituents. In the present paper, the summary action of all heat sources is analyzed on the basis of experimental data on the latitudinal and seasonal temperature variations at the height of the mesopause.
