The transfer of solar wind energy through the magnetopause into the depth of the magnetosphere is analyzed, allowing for the role of the interplanetary magnetic and electric fields in the dynamics of the magnetized solar plasma flow about the magnetospheric cavity. The hydrodynamic model of this flow is used as a basis to determine the rate at which the magnetic flow increases in the magnetospheric tail prior to a substorm and also the storage rate of the magnetic energy which is subsequently dissipated during the active phase of the substorm.
