Cosmic strings from superstring inspired gauge models often turn out to be superconducting. We consider in detail one such example in which the string also is superheavy. The model possesses a variety of fermion zero-modes which can lead to a number of interesting consequences. For instance, the superheavy quark sector provides zero-modes which can carry the large currents required for the Ostriker-Thomson-Witten scenario of galaxy formation. The heavy lepton sector, on the other hand, provides a superconducting cosmic collider of extremely high energy. Suitable discrete symmetries, which could arise from the compactification mechanism are needed, in general, to accomplish these rather spectacular effects. A discussion of scattering processes involving the zero-modes on the string is presented in some detail.
