The Alfven wave equation which gives the coupling between the surface wave and the shear Alfven wave for magnetic fields varying both in magnitude and in direction is discussed. It is shown that the Alfven equation can admit a harmonic solution in a closed form valid over a finite time interval. The upper limit of this time interval can be roughly estimated as the phase mixing time, which can become appreciably large for small values of the angle between the magnetic field directions on either side of the magnetospheric boundary. This solution shows that the Alfven surface waves can have a band of frequency instead of only a monochromatic frequency, within which the field line resonance frequency can lie and thus excite harmonic oscillations of the local field lines.
