We calculate the spectral modifications which arise from the scattering of photons by accretion disks around nonmagnetic neutron stars. We find that extremely compact stars (which lie inside the marginally stable orbit) must exhibit a copious hard X-ray flux, and that the radiation field entirely dominates the dynamical behavior of disks around these objects. Based on these findings, we reinterpret the "black hole candidates" as extremely compact stars. We also offer a simple explanation for the observed hardening of low mass X-ray binary spectra, at low accretion rates, in terms of nongeodesic infall onto mildly compact stars.
