ROSAT performed 22 pointed observations of the local group spiral galaxy M33 with the Position Sensitive Proportional Counter (PSPC) and the High Resolution Imager (HRI) between July 1991 and January 1998. A first analysis of part of the data by Schulman & Bregman (1995) and Long et al. (1996) revealed about 60 X-ray sources. From the analysis of all PSPC and HRI data we obtained a catalogue of 184 discrete X-ray sources within 50' of the nucleus of the galaxy, tripling the number of known X-ray sources in the region of M33. 130 sources were detected by the HRI and positions accurate to a few arcsec were determined. For most of the 114 sources detected by the PSPC, hardness ratios - indicators for the shape of the X-ray spectrum - could be derived. The large amount of data offers the unique opportunity to study the detailed physical properties of individual X-ray sources as well as the global statistical properties of different types of X-ray sources like supernova remnants and X-ray binaries in M33. X-ray properties of the sources like time variability and spectral hardness allow to classify the sources into different types according to their different X-ray production mechanisms. We utilize the classification scheme developed from similar work on the ROSAT data of the Magellanic Clouds (Haberl & Pietsch 1999) to more easily separate foreground and background objects and to study the spatial distribution of X-ray sources most likely intrinsic to M33. First results revealed candidates for supersoft X-ray sources (SSSs), new likely X-ray binaries and identifications with supernova remnants in M33, foreground stars and candidates for active galactic nuclei (AGN).
