The microstructure of the metallic particles and some other features of six chondritic meteorites wore examined. The particles are interpreted as products of the fragmentation of spherical nickel-iron chondrules upon impact with the sandy surface of an accumulating parent meteorite body. One of the meteorites, Ness County, appears to have endured a severe collision is space. It is suggested that a clue to the minimum temperature reached by a meteorite might be provided by inducing the martensite transformation in taenite.
