We propose to observe for 70 ks with both Chandra and XMM-Newton, the Seyfert 2 galaxy that exhibits the most spectacular optical and IR ionization cones: NGC 5252. The goals of this proposal are to: i)firmly demonstrate that the diffuse emission is due to an outflowing gas driven by the central AGN and to determine its physical characteristics; ii)study the past history of the AGN activity of NGC5252 on a, potentially, 10^{5-6} years time scale, depending on the gas outflow velocity; iii)observe in X-rays the ``shadow'' of the dusty torus of this Seyfert 2. Even if only one of the above mentioned goals is achieved, this would represent a significant step forward in the comprehension of the physics of AGN.
