We propose to observe the spiral galaxy M51 (NGC 5194 and 5195) to investigate the nature of ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) by using spectral variability. Our previous Chandra observations have shown that M51 contains 7 ULXs with luminosities greater than 10^39 ergs/s in 0.5-8 keV and that there is great variety of the properties of the ULXs (persistent and transient, hard and soft spectra, with and without emission lines). The new Chandra data will be used to measure the spectral shapes more precisely, to determine the spectral state based on the spectra and comparison with the precious observations, and to understand the physical nature of the variety of ULXs.
