Scientific paper

Following our detection and study of X-ray emission from a shock associated with a protostellar jet (from L1551 IRS5) we propose to observe with Chandra HH 355F and HH 311, two shocks associated with protostellar jets for which previous (unreported) evidence of associated X-ray emission is present. The spatial resolution of Chandra will allow to study the structure and the distribution of the X-ray emission along the extent of the shock front, as well as to perform spatially resolved low-resolution X-ray spectroscopy, thus studying the physical conditions in the two targets, and also assessing their influence on the conditions of e.g. the protostellar accretion disk.
