An analysis is made of differential energy spectra of H, He, C, and O ions with energies exceeding 1 MeV in the radiation belts at the geomagnetic equator in a magnetically quiet period. It is shown that at L of at least 4 the rigidity of the spectrum is a function of the ion charge state. The form of the ion spectrum is found to reflect charge states characteristic for coronal temperatures of 1-million to 2-million K. This finding is used to explain the existence of dominant streams of heavy ions in the radiation belts.
