The paper presents a brief history of the International Research on the Interior of the Sun (IRIS) observing program, which is a worldwide network eight observing stations for full disk helioseismology, using sodium-cell spectrophotometers making full-disk Doppler measurements. Particular attention is given to structure and membership of the international cooperation in the IRIS program, the IRIS sites and teams, and the membership rule. The report of the first meeting of the IRIS Scientific Committee is presented.
