A ground-based survey for optical counterparts to radio jets is described. Present detection limits are consistent with all radio jets having continuous spectra into the optical with spectral indices near -0.7. A list was compiled of some 33 nearby radio jet galaxies, using published and unpublished radio maps from the Westerbork, Cambridge, Greenbank and VLA interferometers. A selection of these objects, was examined starting with those having the brightest radio jets, using the digital imaging TV system at Kitt Peak (the so-called Video Camera) on the Mayall 4 m telescope. The resulting sample of jets available for study from the ground is small, and significant observational progress in defining jet characteristics under different physical conditions will require use of the Space telescope.
