The physical mechanism underlying the transfer of energy, mass and momentum from the solar wind into the magnetosphere is presently addressed by a consideration of the energy and mass transfer from a plasma kinetic viewpoint, incorporating a description of the current, which involves the generation of particle kinetic energy by mass transfer. The plasma flow (or pressure) is converted into electrical energy in the boundary-layer interaction region. The boundary layer's persistence and its low-altitude footprint, the dayside cleft/cusp, is held to be strong evidence for this model.
