We will present simulation results of the flow dynamics in theco-orbital region of a protoplanet, with an emphasis on theevolution of its potential vorticity profile. We show thatthe flow's p.v. profile develops inflexion points due tothe presence of shocks. The continuing change of the p.v. profileeventually leads to a secondary instability, the nonlinearoutcome of which is the production of vortices. Born in theco-orbital region, these vortices undergo close-encounters withthe planet, exerting strong torques on the planet which showlarge fluctuations in the magnitude and direction. Implicationfor the migration will be discussed.
