VLF waves can have a large effect on radiation belt electrons through cyclotron-resonant interactions. Coherent interactions with monochromatic waves can lead to pitch angle and energy diffusion, just as quasilinear interactions with broadband waves do, but can also lead to phase bunching and phase trapping, with very different results. Here, the energization rate to be expected from VLF chorus waves is reexamined, including time-varying frequency and relativistic effects. Analogous interactions with drift/bounce resonant ULF waves will also be considered.
