We report the results of an investigation of the generation of ordered fine structure sometimes observed in auroral kilometric radiation (also called striated auroral kilometric radiation or SAKR). Two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations are conducted for a "horseshoe" plasma distribution of electrons with a modest beam component as is typically observed in the AKR source region. The results show the impact of electron beam-generated ion cyclotron waves on the generation of the AKR. Such waves are known to modulate the energy of auroral electrons within the AKR source region. Alternative methods to the generation of SAKR by solitary potential structures will also be discussed.
