Type II radio bursts have long been used as the main indicator of shocks in the corona, giving both the density and an estimate of shock speed. This talk compares radio with white light and UV diagnostics for shocks, with particular attention to pre-shock coronal conditions and the conditions needed for efficient acceleration of Solar Energetic Particles (SEPs).
