Networks of reactions on interstellar dust grain surfaces lead to the formation of molecular hydrogen, ice mantles and various organic molecules. Due to the sub-micron size of the grains and the low flux, the populations of reactive species on a grain may be small and strongly fluctuating. Under these conditions rate equations fail and stochastic methods based on the master equation are needed. However, the number of equations in the master equation proliferates as the network becomes more complex. A recently introduced method based on moment equations provides a dramatic reduction in the number of equations. Here we apply the moment equations to evaluate the formation rate of water molecules on ice-coated dust grains in molecular clouds.
