RCW 86/SN185 is one of the few shell-type remnants with X-ray synchrotron radiation. The remnant has a strong contrast in densities and probably also in shock velocities. In order to characterize both the thermal and non-thermal emission, we propose a large program with several deep pointings, chosen such that high resolution spectroscopy with the RGS is possible. This way temperatures can be measured using single ion spectroscopy, thereby circumventing the confusion caused by the simultenuous presence of thermal and non-thermal continuum. XMM-Newton s RGS instrument is unique in its capability to obtain the high resolution spectra necessary for our goals, even for source extents of a few arcmin.
