Many stellar interior codes assume that the solar plasma is fully ionized everywhere except for surface layers. The present investigation is concerned with the effect of partial ionization, taking into account Coulomb interactions and scattering states and their influence on the screened Saha equation. Attention is given to an approach in which the perfect gas is a good first approximation and the Coulomb corrections can be treated as a perturbation. The treatment of nonhydrogenic ions is considered along with the scattering state higher terms, and a model calculation. A description is given of the results of calculations with six different forms of the equation of state. It is concluded that the equation of state generally used in the calculation of stellar interior and other astrophysical plasmas should take account of scattering states. As far as the solar model is concerned, it is shown that relatively minor changes are produced by the treatment of the ionization equilibrium equation of state.
