This proposal addresses the intriguing question of how galaxy populations are related to the origin of metals in the intra-cluster medium (ICM) in order to provide a better model of how the ICM came to be metal rich. The conundrum is that the ICM gas mass is 5 times the galaxy mass in clusters, yet the metals must come from the end point in stellar evolution. We posit that there are 2 primary sources for the ICM metals: intra-cluster Pop III stars and recent enough injection from cD galaxies to produce metallicity gradients. Instead highly evolved cluster galaxies could have been the primary source of metals. To study the orgin of ICM metals we propose to observe 2 clusters which have bi-modal X-ray emission and also an unusual excess of young blue galaxies (BGs) for their z.
