While much progress has been made in recent years on the problem of cooling in galaxy groups and clusters, a number of important issues remain unresolved. One of these is the question of why some systems show no central cool core. A number of possible mechanisms for reheating cool gas (AGN outbursts, mergers) or forming groups with long central cooling times (strong preheating) have been proposed, but it is unclear how effective these are and what fraction of the population is affected by them. We propose deep observations of three non-cool-core groups, allowing us to map the gas density, temperature, abundance and entropy structure in detail and thereby determine which factors have been effective in preventing cooling.
