Massive stars generate most of the heavy elements in the universe and have a dominant influence on the evolution of galaxies. The turbulent core model for massive star formation predicts that massive stars today form in about 105 yr. Remarkably enough, the same formalism can be used to describe the formation of primordial stars. Calculation of the luminosity and spectrum of the first generation of stars suggests that their masses were at least about 30 M&sun;.
