Recent proposals that gravity might arise from quantum field theory via spontaneous symmetry breaking lead to a violation of the second law of thermodynamics when applied to quantum black holes. The violation can only be rendered statistically insignificant if the symmetry breaking mass is close to the Plack mass. My results suggest that the so-called ``new improved'' stress tensor for scalar fields is generally physically unacceptable.
