We reconsider the underlying physics and the dispersion properties of
inertial and kinetic Alfvén waves in plasmas, accounting for the
inertial electron and kinetic ion responses. In that way, we clarify the
ambiguities in a recently published paper by Chaston et al. [Geophys.
Res. Lett. 30(6), 1289, doi:10.1029/2002GL015777, 2003].
