We present recent infrared and submillimeter continuum results on the density structure of pre-stellar cores and on the mass distribution of pre-collapse condensations in star-forming clusters. These set strong observational constraints on the initial conditions for individual protostellar collapse and on the origin of the stellar initial mass function.
