We present new data at 850 microns taken with SCUBA at the JCMT for 19 luminous infrared galaxies. Fourteen galaxies were detected and for the rest upper limits were obtained. We have used these data, together with fluxes at 25, 60 and 100 microns from IRAS, to analyze the dust emission. We find that the emission of most galaxies can be described by optically thin emission at a single temperature with an exponent of the dust extinction coefficient (k_λ ~ λ^{-β}) of β ≍ 1.5 - 2. However, for 2 galaxies (Arp 220, NGC 4418) a much lower value, β ≍ 1, is necessary to describe the data. We discuss various possibilities for this difference and conclude that the most likely is a high dust opacity. We also compared the molecular gas mass derived from the dust emission to the molecular gas mass derived from the CO emission. We find that the molecular gas mass derived from the CO is on average a factor 2-3 higher than the mass derived from the dust emission.
