High energy astroparticle physics research is currently intensified. It connects high energy particle physics with astrophysics and cosmology. In the field of gamma ray astronomy one has revealed in the recent years the first TeV sources. In the 100 GeV to 10 TeV energy range the only high sensitivity instruments are based on the Cherenkov radiation detection. A short overview of the principles, the current instruments and an outlook of the next generation detectors will be given.
