Based on an extensive survey for binary stars in the ``Carney- Latham" survey of proper motion stars, we suspect that many of the highest velocity stars are not representative of the Galaxy's early dynamical state, but rather obtained their velocities through either merger events or binary disruptions. We propose to use the echelle spectrograph to derive [Fe/H] and [(alpha)/Fe] elemental abundances (``(alpha)"=O, Mg, Si, Ca) in extreme velocity stars that have clearly not suffered a binary disruption: binary stars and common proper motion (CPM) pairs. Studies of two such stars to date show anomalous [(alpha)/Fe] ratios, indicative of a different chemical enrichment history and, therefore, signs of merger events.
