We have found a new method of measuring mass ratios in cataclysmic variables, and have used it to identify four stars with very light secondaries (0.02-0.04 M_&sun;). We think we've learned how to find more, and expect to trace out the history of how the secondaries are whittled down in mass during the final stages of evolution. This occurs at or after the binary's minimum period, when evolution is dominated by angular momentum loss (which therefore plays the role of nuclear burning familiar in single stars). This history can be extracted from a program of time-series photometry to reveal the orbital and ``superhump" periods to an accuracy of ~ 0.3%.
