We consider the response of static DeWitt monopole particle detectors in thermal states on static space-times. We show that the response is proportional to the Planck spectrum up to a factor rho _n (x; nu ) which acts as a ``local density of states''. We relate rho _n (x; nu ) to the hear kernel for the Laplacian on the spatial section of the optical space-time. We apply our analysis to the case of a uniformly accelerated particle detector moving through n-dimensional Minkowski space-time and shed a new light on the apparent ``inversion of statistics'' in odd space-time dimensions.
