The origin of spectral lines and the nature of the information derived from recent star observations are discussed. Quantum mechanics and spectroscopic theory are first considered, noting the importance of the Balmer continuum found below 3646 A, and the Lyman continuum below 912 A. Type A stars possess the optimum temperature for hydrogen Balmer emission. Determination of the number of absorbed atoms from growth curves provides elemental abundance values. Forbidden lines, in a way similar to allowed lines, are sensitive to the temperature and density of the emitting region and permit the determination of ion abundances; they also make possible the identification of two classes of ionized nebula. Measurement of the forbidden 21-cm hydrogen line permits the accurate assessment of distances, and the determination of the quantity of gas associated with each galaxy.
